  The katana is a Japanese weapon that has been in use since at least the 12th century. It is made of a sharpened blade housed in a rectangular hilt, with the blade affixed to the grip by means of two rivets. The resulting weapon is very lightweight and easy to handle; its tsuba (guard) protects the hand and prevents slipping of the sword from the fingers. The tsuka (handguard) is usually of wood, but may also be made from metal and is often decorated. The katana has two distinct forms: the standard sugata (teburasugata) and the suburasugata. Both types are distinguished primarily by their length; the sugata is slightly longer than the suburasugata. The former type was used by almost all military units, while the latter type was mostly wielded by officers and nobles.   The history of samurai swords dates back to the pre-history of Japan.
