The Knights Templar, a well known order of the crusades, became less and less prominent over the years as they were steadily decimated by wars with Muslims. The Templars were an influential military and economic force who challenged many of the rulers in Europe, but as they grew to power their own members questioned their morals. 


The final blow to this order was when King Philip IV of France accused all members as heretics and forbade them to practice again. This proclamation left a void in the power structures that caused a long chain reaction. Their weapons including knight templar swords are still remembered by people. 

Historical Background Of Knight Templars


In 1119, the Templars with knight templar swords were granted two French castles in the Holy Land by King Baldwin II, the Latin King of Jerusalem. The Templars took their vows and became a military order in 1128 under Hugues de Payen, who was a Knight Templar later in life. 


The knight templar swords were not all from France or Europe. Some came from other parts of Europe or from the Near East, including Germany and Spain. They adopted the name "Templars" from a phrase in Isaiah: "On that day shall there be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the Lord." (Isaiah 19:19) This name was then applied to them by their contemporaries.

 

In 1139, they were tasked with defending a castle belonging to Isaac. The Knights Templar were also responsible for guarding pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem and places such as Bethlehem, Nazareth and Mount Sinai. They became known as defenders of Christianity and freedom fighters against Muslims in Outremer (the Holy Land). Their knight templar swords were part of their great history.

The knight templar sword was used on and off by the Knights Templar throughout their history. It’s design was not readily available, so most people copied it in order to obtain something similar. However, the Knights Templar did provide this sword as a gift to new members and as a symbol of authority when they held court.


The Knight Templar Sword wasn’t typically used in actual combat situations; it was primarily seen in parades and knightly rituals. This is why it became a symbol of knighthood; the blade reflected the prestige that came with membership in the Knights Templar.

How Does This Sword Fit in With The Medieval Era?


The Knights Templar was a religious order that existed from 1118 until their disbandment in 1417. The order's main objectives were fighting and protecting the pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem and actively fighting against the Muslims with their knight templar swords.


So knights of the late 13th century, who were sworn to Templar ideals, would most probably be wearing some form of religious or military garb. The Knights Templar developed a reputation for secrecy, wisdom and spirituality. With these qualities comes prestige and protection, so it’s easy to understand how these knight templar swords came to the medieval era.
