Top 3 Types of Swords Used in History:
A sword is a weapon consisting of a long blade attached to a hilt. Various types of swords have been used in warfare, hunting, and as a tool. A sword can be straight or curved, thrusting or slashing. The earliest evidence of swords dates back about 400,000 years ago to Africa.
Metalworking technology was developed around 2500 BC in the Middle East with writing systems being developed in the same period. This is when historians believe that the sword shape became standardized among hunter-gatherers. There are however some who believe this was not true until around 3000 years later.
During the Bronze Age around 4000 BC in Western Asia, the first "complex" swords began to emerge. A more systematic approach to production developed, beginning the use of more regular shapes and sizes.
The sword was considered a defining characteristic of men and warriors in Ancient Regime Europe but swords were also used as tools for ordinary people. The average life expectancy of a European during this period was about 30 years old. This is likely due to the prevalence of disease and famine at that time combined with a lack of medical knowledge.
Historical Swords:
The following is a list of three famous types of swords that you might find interesting.
1. Norse Sword:
The first sword to make its way into the news was the Norse sword, which has been said to have been used by both Vikings and Saxons. Some believe it came from North America in an early Viking invasion, but the best evidence for this is found at a site in Norway.
The sword likely had carvings of serpent heads on one side of its blade and beast heads on the other because it was made from bronze and silver alloys that are best suited for weapons with grotesque animals engraved onto them.
2. Damascus Sword:
The second most famous historical sword is the Damascus sword, which saw action in many legendary battles and was always associated with the Middle East. No one is certain where it originated, but experts believe that its uses ranged from long-range slashing to close combat (with a straight edge or saw-back.)
It was said to be "smoother than silk", light, and sharp; making it one of the most valuable swords in history for its time period. There are also a few popular stories about its creation including one that says a coppersmith accidentally melted together multiple blades along with other metals to create a unique pattern on the Damascus sword.
3. St. Edward's Sword:
The third most famous historical sword is the St. Edward's Sword, which was also said to be used by King Alfred the Great. A royal jewel steeped in history, it once belonged to King Æthelred II and was given to King Alfred by Archbishop of Canterbury, St. Dunstan, when he became king by right of succession.
It has a long blade with a cross hilt that is hand-carved from ivory and has gold and silver fittings on it (to represent the twelve apostles.) However, despite its beauty; some claim that it killed more Englishmen than any other sword in history due to it being carried by King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings.
Swords as Cosplay Weapons!
One of the best parts of cosplay is being able to play dress up and bring your favorite character to life. Cosplayers also have a great time taking part in their favorite TV show, comic book, or book and playing out an act that they've seen on screen. There are times when there's nothing like playing a game or watching an action movie while you're wearing an awesome costume!
But if you've never cosplayed before, one area that seems a bit tricky is props. Weapons throughout history have always been integrated into costumes so enthusiasts can bring them to life and readjust the significance behind some of these weapons over time as well.
Types of swords, in any context and from any point of view, are awesome. You can use them as a samurai sword, or you can take the time to paint one for cosplay. The benefit and popularity of these weapons have led to the development of cosplays in swordsmithing.
It's possible for anyone to create their own weapon using traditional techniques and modern materials like aluminum or titanium, but it does require some level of skill in metalworking and painting skills.
